Description
The only remaining publicly accessible lido in Essex, Brightlingsea Lido is a freshwater, unheated, seasonal pool situated on a tidal estuary. It is an irregular shape with shallow area and deep end max 1.8 metres.
Facilities
The main pool is approximately 50 metres x 20 metres and there is a large paddling pool. Sun loungers are available and there is a small café on site.
The lido is an integral part of Brightlingsea’s traditional promenade area which also features a boating lake, beach paddling pool, playground, beach huts, gardens and skate park.
Notable facts
Construction of the lido was supported by the Unemployment Grant Committee and provided much welcome work for the large number of local unemployed men.
Originally a sea water facility, the lido has used fresh water since the 1970s.
Current plans
Operation of the lido was transferred to a Charitable Incorporated Association in 2018 which was established to run the lido supported by a large team of dedicated volunteers. The aim is to be a fully inclusive community facility, protecting the lido for future generations.
Future plans being considered are: heating the water (or at least taking the edge off), exploring use of salt water, making the pool a more uniform shape (to make it easier to cover and retain heat) and running a community café from the site.
