Join us at Byrne Avenue Baths on Wednesday 20 October

Byrne Avenue Baths

We are delighted to be able to extend an invitation to our next Historic Pools of Britain event and our first in-person event since the Covid-19 pandemic. And we are even more thrilled that it will take place at Byrne Avenue Baths, which has taken its first huge steps back to life thanks to an inspiring community campaign.

Our event will take place on Wednesday 20 October at Byrne Avenue Baths in Rock Ferry on the Wirral. We’ll find out more about this fascinating project, the fundraising that’s made it possible and the work that’s gone into the first stage of this community vision led by Byrne Avenue Trust. Taking place in stages, the first sees back into use a sports hall and community room, which will shortly be followed by the slipper baths café.

Whilst we are visiting this area of the country we are delighted that we’ll also be hearing from Merseyside’s People’s Pool. It wants to bring back the joys of outdoor swimming, and all the associated benefits, to an area that once boasted 11 lidos and was right at the heart of what are described as the glory days of outdoor swimming. This is not the country’s only project with such aspirations and we’ll be delving deeper into this whole subject.

One of the important factors behind many historic pools is the fundraising and friends organisations that provide much needed support and community connections. We’ll be hearing from and sharing learnings from some member pools including Manchester’s Victoria Baths and Droitwich Spa Lido.

This will be our first in-person event without Gill Wright, our founder. Her legacy will be upmost in our thoughts and helping to deliver a rewarding day will be our three trustees Mike Kirkman, Joe Stanhope and Amanda Harwood who have brilliantly provided the support that Historic Pools of Britain needs.

Join us for a day of talks, tours, conversation, catching up and more, with morning refreshments and lunch included.
