Call for support for historic pools
2020 is certainly not turning out to be the year that everyone thought it would be. Across the country, whilst some pools are now opening or have planned reopening dates, others have made the decision to remain closed in 2020 and some pools face a very uncertain future. It’s a complex picture for historic pools as many have high levels of community involvement and are used to supporting local activities other than just swimming. Fundraising can play an important role and historic pools, more than ever, now really do need as much support as possible.
SwimEngland ran a fantastic #OpenOurPools campaign to urge the Government to allow pools to reopen. Now it is asking the Government to strengthen its financial support for pools, recognising the mental and physical wellbeing benefits that swimming unlocks.
As representatives of historic pools we are joining in this call. We also want to encourage people to give as much support as possible directly to their local or favourite historic pool. One of the simplest ways is to join a Friends scheme, but you can also show your support by volunteering, following pools on social media, sharing their messages, and booking in swims with those that are open.
You can find out the fascinating stories behind our member pools here and remember if you are planning a swim do check directly on their website for opening details and booking information.
