HPB event at Saltdean Lido – Tuesday 24 June 2025

On Tuesday 24 June (10.30am to 3.30pm) we are hosting our summer HPB event at Saltdean Lido, just outside Brighton.  One of only two Grade II* listed lidos, Saltdean Lido is a very special place.  In 2015 Historic England named it one of England’s seven seaside wonders and it is easy to see why.

Today, thanks to a major programme of restoration, Saltdean Lido is as glorious as during its 1930s heydays.  But at one point its future wasn’t so bright.

In March 2010 the Save Saltdean Lido Campaign was established by the community after the announcement of plans to demolish the pool and build flats on the site.

The history of this modernist masterpiece, how its future was threatened and the community-led campaign to save and restore it will be our backdrop to the day.  We’ll hear about securing funding, the challenges faced and the outcomes that were celebrated when, 14 years later, the final stages of restoration work were completed.

Also joining us will be speakers from:

Motcombe Pool in Eastbourne – which has just celebrated its 120th birthday with news that it has secured funding for its rejuvenation project.

Pells Pool in Sussex – the oldest public open-air, freshwater swimming pool in continuous use in the UK since opening in 1861.

The Stand Lido in Kent – which has been a popular tourist destination since 1896.

Swindon Health Hydro – which is currently undergoing the first stages of a restoration programme.
